Anime: Uragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru (Sakurai Takahiro, Hoshi Souichirou)

UraBokuUragiri wa Boku no Namae o Shitteiru 裏切りは僕の名前を知っている anime based on shoujo manga by Odagiri Hotaru 小田切ほたる ^^ will be aired in Japan on April 2010.

Summary (adapted and edited from wikipedia)
Sakurai Yuki was abandoned right after he was born. Because of his past, Yuki strives for independence and hates being a burden to anyone.

Since young, he can feel people’s emotions though touch. Unable to control his power, he often made insensitive blunders in the past. He later encounters a mysterious yet beautiful man who saves his life, but somehow he feels like he has met him before.

With death threats and his powers increasing, a man who claimed to be his older brother suddenly appears. What will happen to Yuki now?

Comments:
I really love Odagiri-sensei’s early shounen-ai works but for UraBoku, I’m not sure if I have the patience to sit through this type of reincarnation story anymore *dodges rocks from fangirls*

So yeah, I admit haven’t read the manga. ^^;;;

Anyway, it is supposed to be a story with shounen-ai hints using the reincarnation plot device that I would consider quite typical in shoujo manga when they want to explain the BL bits. *shrugs* Should it be given the BL anime tag? Hmm… what do you think?

I’ll give it a try when it shows and see how it goes. I do love the lead Sakurai Takahiro and the other stellar seiyuu casts in the anime are very attractive too. But it’s giving me a very Vampire Knight kind of vibe. (*whispers* I dropped that anime after the first episode) *dodges more boulders* ^^;;;

Update 13 April 2010: I quite enjoyed the first episode cos boy Yuki is rather likable and the girl in his previous life seemed pretty cool too. The first episode also establishes the scene and main characters quite well. The “if I’m destined to die, then I want you to kill me” angsty plot-device is used to death already but it still works here ^^;;; From the vibe I get from the first episode, it also doesn’t feel pretentious and unbelievable like Vampire Knight’s anime (Vampires and humans in the same school… yeah right… =_= )

I think I’ll continue watching Uraboku anime and just enjoy it as an action shoujo work. But I can’t help but go mini-kyaaa in my heart during the expected scene where Sakurai Takahiro’s character rescues boy Yuki and hugged him while flying through the air in slow-motion lol~ I love Sakupyon <3

  1. Uraboku is getting good now YukixLuka do have a shonen-ai love relationship on episode 5 Luka made his feeling clear XD and ep 7 i think will have a balcony romantic love moment lol

  2. I know his role as the new butler right!!! isn’t the new butler is too expressionless? but i really look forward of it~ takahiro sakurai voice is really suit dark prince and cool guys!!! XDDDDDDD and i just realize all odagiri production is voiced by him e.g Kazuki yuichii (sono yubi dake ga shitteiru) and Luka Crosszeria (uragiri wa boku no namae wa shitteiru~) XDDDDDD

    1. @Mito: I’m looking forward to it too! July! XD That’s true… maybe Odagiri-sensei really likes his voice. He is a good match for her characters he plays too.

  3. Oh yeah the fight poses, haha. xP That was yeah… a bit odd to see. xD

    Mmmm, but Luka kind of sounds the same as Claude Faustus (Kuroshitsuji 2). :\ Sooo… I don’t know. Dx It kind of sounds like the generic ‘dark and dangerous’ to me now. x_x Though… I haven’t exactly compared them side by side…. … :\

    1. @Kirishima: yeah~ I think those fighting poses look kinda corny for a story like this *_* Ah~ then he’s the perfect-dark-prince XD woo~ I’m looking forward to his role in Kuroshitsuji 2

  4. Of course it does. :3 I think Luka is being pretty patient already xD, just that the rest of the people keep trying to make it happen because they’re aware of who Yuki used to be, even though Yuki is clueless on what they’re trying to do and Luka is like *sigh* here you guys go again. Seems ok to let Yuki move at his own pace. ^^

    I’m working on assignments right now so I can’t watch it (or at least not until my internet refreshes) so noooo! xD Good thing though. :D Will look forward to it. I thought some of the fight scenes in 2nd ep were already a bit… hrm. =_=;

    Sakurai Takahiro’s voice is sometimes a bit more monotonal than I would expect. :\ Hmm.

    1. Hehe that sounds so sweet~ I’m looking forward to seeing more. I think it’s perfect to cast Sakupyon as Luka ^^ really the perfect-prince type.

      Yeah, I really hope they don’t do the “fighting-pose-sequence” for each character before every encounter x_x;;; We’re not watching magical girl anime, please. Hopefully the action scenes improve.

      Luka seems like he has to hold back his feelings, so I think that’s why Sakupyon lowers his voice a lot more. I was doubtful about casting Hoshi Souichirou at first but he was much better than expected :D

  5. QAQ He probably doesn’t even understand how he feels yet, ahahaa….

    Well, apparently there are 7 volumes (manga)? :\
    Oh dearrr….

    Well, as far as we know, just the two. :\”

    1. Yeah which makes him even cuter in a way. O~ only two? XD Lol~ Luka has to be more patient then and when Yuki realises, it’ll be more beautiful. I just watched Episode 3 of the anime! The action (fighting scenes) were kinda iffy and *cough* boring ^^;;; but the story seems to get a lot better from now on XD

  6. Also… thinks like life/immortality & death/mortality = inconsequential. T_T;;

    It’s the way love transcends time, I guess. :D”

    I agree about the attractiveness. :\ Not as nice as manga. :\ But ok. ^_^
    Yuki will come into his own later ~

  7. Reading some of the chapters made me feel better instantly. :D Luka obviously keeps in mind that Yuki y’know has that kind of relationship (…) with Yuki of the past, but also treats Yuki (urgh.. boy-Yuki I mean =_=; ) as an individual. :D

    QAQ I hope they don’t stick to that too much.

    1. I think the continual sexual tension between the two would make fans want to keep reading on so probably boy Yuki won’t be confessing so soon… ^^

      How many lifetimes has Luka followed Yuki, I wonder? :O

  8. Well, seeing as the author/mangaka specialises in Shounen-Ai, and if this one was Shoujo, it would actually be the only one, I would say it’s definitely going to be more Shounen-Ai-ish later (or BL fans will rail). The only thing is that a lot of people don’t like Shounen-Ai, which is why they make such a big fuss of Yuki as a girl in the opening and closing credits. =_=; That is the only reason I’m so miffed about the anime, that they’re deliberately creating this thing about their past, they’re so caught up in it! Luka/Zess could love Yuki for who he is. He’s been following him around after all. And Yuki is not the same as the past Yuki, even if they share similar traits. >_> *growls*

    Yeah. So even if the manga will definitely be Shounen-Ai (already a few hints of it… …), depends how the producers of the anime go… >_>;

  9. To momo yes i agree and we have to keep fingers crossed as i have a friend in japan now hoping to right to Hotaru Odagiri and remind her that fans will want her to get them together because it would be awfull if they did not after all of the clear feelings they have for each other so hopfully she will pease her fans and not upset them, Hi ponytale. lol

  10. Hey~ lol. I’ve been following the manga since it first came out, and its more focused on Yuki. I even skimmed ahead in the raws, and they don’t tend to show Yuki (as his girl version much) I guess its to show he was a girl, ya know, the shoujo bits, but lol, it is shonen-ai-ish though :P And yeah, I’m a fan of Hotaru Odagiri and I actually do like the anime since her art is so pretty. Plus, I like Yuki and Luka <3. Though, they just need to add more shonen-ai stuff between them. :) And they have a great seiyuu cast (has my faves: Sakurai Takahiro, Fukuyama Jun, Miyano Mamoru, Ishida Akira <3) course, I quite like the others too :) Either way, I still love the anime :3 I was really happy it became an anime too. Haha, JUST hoping they go further into the story though since I can't read the manga T.T Trans too slow. Either way, bishies galore in uraboku! And yeah, I love the parts Luka comes to save Yuki Kya~! And i'd be so happy if hotaru-sensei gets the boys together :D

    1. @Kirishima: *pets* Yeah, BL fangirls are still a minority in the otaku world, aren’t we? Although it feels like a big community but that’s because we hang out with like-minded folks who like this genre. That’s why I can understand why the anime which is targeted at the mainstream audience tries to be as non-BL as possible by using the shoujo manga explanation (He was a girl in his past life!) DVD sales are important…

      @m: lol~ XD you’re always welcomed here hee… ah~ Let’s hope the boys come together. But problem is… Luka isn’t human right? So unless we can let Yuki live forever in some way, they’ll eventually have to be separated and then try to be reunited again? ^^

      @momo: Hi momo, thanks for commenting XD I love Sensei’s style on manga… but I feel it didn’t translate so well on anime tho. The anime is still attractive but not as beautiful as the manga. Lol~ does Yuki get rescued a lot? *sweat* XD I didn’t read Uraboku manga you see… Prepares for more Kyaa~ I <3 Sakupyon-prince-mode moments. Somehow it just feels more satisfying to watch shounen-ai "princess"-in-distress" than real "girl-princess-in-distress" in anime? *_*

  11. Yes we hope there will be a confession for them and they do end up as a pair. you can send a comment to Hotaru on her site here hxxp://www7a.biglobe.ne.jp/~ethereal-code/index.html lets keep asking she likes getting requests but i think letters will be more easy.

    1. Thanks m! The manga is still on-going huh… Hopefully the anime gets round to the action more quickly. I think episode two was a bit too draggy. They could have done a lot more with that one episode.

  12. yes I agree but I still think there is love between Yuki and Luka and I ahte some fans who say its not I have been leaving comments on Hotaru Odagiri website asking that there should be a confession of love for them who says shoujo and shounen-ai cant mix. If you want you can help me contact Hotaru.

    1. @m: I think the major gripe for many BL fangirls with the story is that Yuki’s past life was a girl lol~

      He is still a boy in THIS life afterall ;) Well, I don’t mind at all unless he become a real girl suddenly *_* (cos if that’s the case, I rather he was a girl right from the beginning)

      I’m a lot more interested in how the story progresses… the shounen-ai bits are bonuses which are quite common in shoujo anyway. So far it seems to be holding my attention, so I’m happy with that. ^^

  13. Hi dashlove! It’s a shoujo manga after all… shounen-ai in shoujo manga is quite commonly done this way >< Well, they keep the shoujo manga readers happy and introduce them to light BL. My very first exposure to shounen-ai stories/characters were from shoujo manga too ^^;;;

    As for the girl appearing in the OP and ED, they probably want to firmly establish the fact that Yuki was a girl so that people who don't like BL are not turned off. BL readers are still a minority after all.

    I quite enjoyed the first episode cos boy Yuki is rather likable and the girl in his previous life seemed pretty cool too.

But I can’t help but go mini-kyaaa in my heart during the expected scene where Sakurai Takahiro’s character rescues boy Yuki and hugged him while flying through the air in slow-motion lol~

  14. Hello !! I sooooo agree with all the things you say about Uragiri. I watched the first episode today and T______T i does made me think that this is a shoujo under a BL name. I freaked out this morning after watching it and went look on the net to see if anyone had seen it. And here I found your comments. Thank you !!!!
    I was very excited when I read about the seiyuu casting, they are all so cool. But in the anime Yuki is just a boy on the outside and appears too much in the form of his previous life –> a girl. And instead of the Yuki-boy, the girl is everywhere with Luka, in the opening, the ending, and so on … (one reason I was so mad ). So … yeah, totally agree with you that it gives the same feel as Vampire Knight ( on which I gave up a long time a go T___T ) because of all the roses, chaines, night, moon …. T___T . I hope that may be only the first episode is like that, and the rest will focus more on Yuki as the boy than his previous life. If not, I would die crying because this seiyuu cast is like a dream, I would be a pity that they are gathered just for another shoujo of this type.

  15. Yes your right, oh you should watch monochrome factor it’s good they have two Bl kiss scenes (uncensored on the japanese dvds look up for the picture for back cover of v.1) it also has a yaoi Shota vibe from Kou-nii and Haruka: note Haruka was made for the anime only not in manga but a very good charector.

    1. Ah~ icic ^^ Now that I think of it, I have only watched the first episode cos I heard some good things about it but it didn’t hold my interest. I’ll try to get back to it when I can :) I know of fans of the manga who are unhappy that they overdid the shounen-ai scenes and rather they stayed true to the original story.

  16. Its done by J.C staff (Loveless, Ymi no matsui) Monochrome Factor manga was not shounen-ai but the anime tv is shounen-ai Kengo and Shirogane both have deep feelings for Akira though Kengo’s is vague (he dreams about him and says his name in his sleep and blushs while thinking of him.

    1. Ah~ icic… I didn’t watch Monochrome Factor. If that’s the case, they probably would give more weight to the shounen-ai bits to attract more BL fangirls ^^ Let’s see how it goes~

    1. Ah~ you’re Ishida’s fan! I hope the anime is good enough to maintain my interest XP if not, even my favourite seiyuus won’t make me stay ^^;;

  17. Phew~ I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks this way XD Kimi ni Todoke is in my to-watch list as well… just haven’t got round to it yet *_* And I think UraBoku also gives off an Angel Sanctuary vibe minus the controversial themes.

    I think my first step into the BL world would probably be Zetsuai… (erm shounen-ai hints in shoujo don’t count, right?) Odagiri-sensei’s older shounen-ai works are very sweet! <3

  18. Only the Ring Finger Knows by Hotaru Odagiri-sensei was my first step into the yaoi world.XDXD

    “I’m not sure if I have the patience to sit through this type of reincarnation story anymore.” Don’t worry, you are not alone.XD I don’t even have the patience to sit through any shoujo anymore. Kimi ni Todoke’s the only shoujo I can watch these days. thankfully. But I only do it about once every 2 weeks though. haha.

    The story reminds me of DNangel slash Vampire Knights though they are entirely different. *shrugs*
